So Thanksgiving is over and we're on our way to Christmas.
Did anyone ever realize being grateful is the opposite of being angry? I feel like that is a really good insight, but I don't know why. Just that there are a lot of people with anger problems.
Oh, speaking of Christmas, what Christmas songs do you like? I know there are some good albums by TransSiberian Orchestra and also Manheim Steamroller. I really hate the Christmas music they play in lots of the stores, especially the ones w/ Michael Jackson singing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" which is annoying beyond any other. (I'd rather hear the dogs barking "Jingle Bells".)
Well, one really good song is "The Christians and the Pagans" by Dar Williams. They played it at church last week and it reminded me how good the song is.
The Christians and the Pagans Lyrics:
Amber called her uncle, said "We're up here for the holiday,
Jane and I were having Solstice, now we need a place to stay."
And her Christ-loving uncle watched his wife hang Mary on a tree,
He watched his son hang candy canes all made with red dye number three.
He told his niece, "It's Christmas Eve, I know our life is not your style,"
She said, "Christmas is like Solstice, and we miss you and it's been a while,"
So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able,
And just before the meal was served, hands were held and prayers were said,
Sending hope for peace on earth to all their gods and goddesses.
The food was great, the tree plugged in, the meal had gone without a hitch,
Till Timmy turned to Amber and said, "Is it true that you're a witch?"
His mom jumped up and said, "The pies are burning," and she hit the kitchen,
And it was Jane who spoke, she said, "It's true, your cousin's not a Christian,"
"But we love trees, we love the snow, the friends we have, the world we share,
And you find magic from your God, and we find magic everywhere,"
So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able,
And where does magic come from? I think magic's in the learning,
'Cause now when Christians sit with Pagans only pumpkin pies are burning.
When Amber tried to do the dishes, her aunt said, "Really, no, don't bother."
Amber's uncle saw how Amber looked like Tim and like her father.
He thought about his brother, how they hadn't spoken in a year,
He thought he'd call him up and say, "It's Christmas and your daughter's here."
He thought of fathers, sons and brothers, saw his own son tug his sleeve, saying,
"Can I be a Pagan?" Dad said, "We'll discuss it when they leave."
So the Christians and the Pagans sat together at the table,
Finding faith and common ground the best that they were able,
Lighting trees in darkness, learning new ways from the old, and
Making sense of history and drawing warmth out of the cold.
- Happy Thanksgiving

Personally, I find Santa Claus is Coming to Town to be quite offensive, given the fascist picture that it paints. Replace the words "Santa Claus" with "Der Kommisar" and see how the song sounds. Quite a repugnant picture it paints.
I like a lot of traditional Christmas music, but I also like some of the "Twisted Christmas" fare, like the parodies by Bob Rivers or Dr. Demento. And I love many of the Muppet Christmas songs! (Five gold rings -- ba da DA dum)

"Der Kommisar" isn't the right number of syllables to replace "Santa Claus". Despite that fact, the song is disturbing no matter who they're singing about, really. And the sound of Michael Jackson singing it when he was a kid is just the right resonance to make me want to kill someone. And it goes on and on and he's loud and obnoxious and not only did someone record it, there are accomplices all around who play that recording back over loudspeakers at the most stressful time of year. No wonder people get trampled in the stores. I'm surprised more people aren't killed.

And it is also the name of a different song by After The Fire. But you know what I mean! ;-P
...just the right resonance to make me want to kill someone
And coming from you that is saying quite a bit! Usually only mosquitoes need fear you! *grin*

I think my favorite Christmas song is, oddly enough, a religious one - Mary Did You Know. And the Christmas shoe song. I just love Christmas music, and it seems to be the only time that Christian music doesn't make me go homicidal, lol.
Also, I have a ton of Manheim Steamroller CDs that you cancopy borrow if you wish. I have another one you might like, but I'm sure you've never heard of them - VoiceBox. They're a local a capella group, they're awesome. Oh, they have another of my favorites, it's called Star of Wonder. Also religious, come to think of it. Well, sort of - I don't think it's explicitly about Jesus or anything, but it is about the star of Bethlehem, and all.
